The apollo mission to the moon was an incredible feat that was accomplished under severe pressure and skill. The intensity of the situation where the astronauts had to maneuver into the moon's orbit while out of contact with the earth must have been insane, and looking back, greatly admirable. The line "Welcome to the moon, Houston" is iconic of the mission, and in my opinion, awsome. The line was told with serious suave.
The hungarian revolt of 1956 was a reactionary event that came about from the opressive nature of the soviets controlling the nation of Hungary. The people atacked tanks, military personnel, and buildings with fire, sticks, rocks, or whatever they could find. The fighting that ensued marks one of the first examples in history where a soviet satellite state revolts, and attempts to achieve independence. The measure of rage and anger that filled the citezens of Hungary is frightening, and apparently frightening enough to establish a foothold in the climb for independence from the USSR.
First I watched "Nixon Ends Bretton Woods International Monetary System", in which he announces that the US is getting off the gold standard. He claims that forex speculators are the cause of international monetary crises and that he is defending the American dollar from them. Nixon also says bugaboo. He says that the removal of the dollar from the gold standard will actually help American currency stability, which was funny. He was correct though, in asserting that a currency backed by the US government alone would retain value.
The second piece was "The Bosnia Crisis: Serbs, Croats and Muslims: who hates who and why: Tony Barber in Zagreb traces the ancient roots of a culture clash that has shattered what was Yugoslavia into warring pieces", straight out of 1992. Serbs and Croats are both Slavic, but have slightly different languages and different written languages. They also are divided by religion. Turkish rule introduced Muslims, which just complicates things because they don't get along with the other populations either. The Serbs' distrust of the Croats was the catalyst for the outbreak of the civil war because of historical differences under communist rule. In the end, the Muslims lost.
