Brendan Drew said...: I watched the youtube clip from the movie Gallipoli (One of my favorite WWI films). The scene shows the ending before the 10th Australian Light Horse does their 3rd and final charge, which has basically become a suicide mission. This part of the movie is an excellent depiction of the complete breakdown of communication; where, because of confusion, the order is given for the Aussies to continue their hopeless charge even though the objective of protecting their British counter parts had already been achieved. This results in the pointless total inhalation of the unit from Turkish Machine Guns.

For my second response, I watched the movie clips from Paths of Glory, Sergeant York, and The Trench. The "going over the top" sequence in the first two both, in my opinion, depicted the true nature of the event realistically for films of their days. However, I felt that The Trench was not up to par with this, so therefore I also watched the ending battle scene from the movie Passchendaele (link at the end), which depicted the true brutal nature of trench warfare in the mud, rain, and the ditches that were the best substitute for a decent fortification. The scene also made use of showing how violent the fighting got once the opposing side got into the enemy's trench, with hand to hand combat with bayonets, rocks, shovels, and anything they could use for killing.

Anonymous said...: I first watched the clip form Gallipoli. It shows the Australians going over the top because of communication problems. It easily showed the problems with communication and the confusion and danger that went along with it. Due to this error, the Australians were decimated by machine gun fire from the Turks.

The second one I watched was about advances in technology. It first went through the major battles and all the militaristic advances like poison gas and machine guns. It also talked about how it was the first war to have color photos. It talked about tanks and how there were even subs that could launch planes. It went over how the war began with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the alliances began to form separating the central powers and the allies. Other countries began joining the war effort and it then became a world war. Many battles occurred on both the eastern and western fronts of Germany. Germany uses poison gas causing horrific consequences and the British used tanks for the first time. During the war the Russian army disintegrated because of their own Civil War. In 1918, fresh American troops began to reach the western front helping the central powers. Later that year Germany called an armistice. Stiff reparations were made at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 that sewed the seeds for a second world conflict years later.

The second video that I watched was about the failure of the Schlieffen Plan. Germany crossed the border into neutral Belgium and they unexpectedly fought back with very few weapons. The Belgians were also outnumbered 10 to 1 having only 150,000 men, but thought that the underground fortresses would be useful. The German's had planned for this and brought Big Bertha, the world's largest cannon, and smashed through the forts. Britain, to Germany's surprise, sent troops to France as they had previously planned. The Schlieffen plan was also failing in the east where Russians mobilized quickly and entered Germany from two different directions. The Germans managed to push the Russians back within a month. The Battle of Marne ended the German advance and Paris was saved. The Schlieffen plan was in ruins and Germany had underestimated the time the war would take.; March 4, 2015 at 4:36 PM
Unknown said...: The first article I read was about the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was forced to hand over all territories they were previously in control of, over to the Allied powers. Also, for the damage caused to coal mines in Northern France, Germany had to cede the coal mines in the Saar Basin, free of debts and charges to France. Many other German areas along the border were given back under the control of the French government. The German military was demobilized and greatly reduced. Germany had to accept the blame of all loss and damage to every Allied power.
The second article I read was a translation of the Zimmerman Note. This was sent from Arthur Zimmerman, a German foreign secretary, to Heinrich von Eckardt, the German Ambassador in Mexico. Zimmerman states that Germany will begin submarine warfare and that they presume the US will remain neutral. However, if the US got involved, Zimmerman proposed that Germany and Mexico could "make war together, make peace together." It is implied that Mexico would regain the territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Zimmerman seems confident that the US will enter WWI.; March 4, 2015 at 4:42 PM

The original plan was for the Germans to push through Belgium and to take and destroy France before Russia could respond. This plan ended up failing due to the resistance that the Belgians caused. In this act of a filibuster, the British were able to help France fight back the German advance.

The second video that I watched was on the ending of Gallipoli. This clip showed many things that happened in war. The first was the difficulty that a person faced as a message runner and the grave importance of this job. The second part of this video showed how the solders would act if they were sent over the top. The clip showed the large scale wave of fear and sadness that would go over the solders because they knew they had no choice but to go over the top.; March 4, 2015 at 6:36 PM
