The first cite a went to was a YouTube clip on a political cartoon. The cartoon has Stalin, Khrushcev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev all in a train. The train stops and they all give their opinion on what they should do about it. The cartoon illustrates the characteristics of each of the Soviet leaders. The video, although it's not very good, does give a basic idea about the principles that each ruled by.
The second cite a went to was another YouTube clip on the song by Billy Joel, "We Didn't Start the Fire". I had heard the song before but never really understood the lyrics or recognized that it was all about key events. After learning about this era in class, I was able to pick up on some of the terms the songs mentions. There were some though that I was confused on or didn't know. Overall I thought this link was really interesting.
The first link i followed was Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech. His speech was about how the U.S was going to stand against totalitarian governments and communism, like the Soviet Union. He said that the soviets didn't respect human rights and their economy was failing, which proved that communist regimes didn't work as well as democracy. Also, he said that the U.S served to protect freedom and peace.
The second link gave a short summary on the leaders of the Soviet Union. Krushchev was known to have a bad temper. He also established the Warsaw Pact in response to NATO. Brezhnev supported Northern Vietnam in the Vietnam War, and legitimized Soviet rule in parts of Eastern and Central Europe that they got in WWII. This was with the Helsinki Act in 1795. Andropov tried to increase workers discipline and inprove the economy, but he failed because he did it in a Stalinist style.
