I looked at the website regarding Catherine de Medici. I learned that she became the Queen of France by marrying Henry II. This was looked down upon by the French because they didn't want an Italian woman as queen. Catherine's marriage was very one-sided. Catherine loved Henry II, but he didn't love her back. He was more interested in his mistress, Diane de Poitiers.
The second link somewhat tied in with the first. It provided a summary of the Hapsburg-Valois Wars. France and Charles V were both fighting over Northern Italy. If Germany took over that region, Charles V's territory would surround and block off France. To prevent this, the Valois were willing to do anything. They started by trying to gain the support of Pope Clement VI by arranging a marriage between his niece, Catherine de Medici, to Henry II, heir to the French throne. Then, France allied with Charles V's enemies, the Ottomans. By supporting the Ottoman empire, Charles V would be more distracted, therefore becoming weaker.
