I listened to the podcasts of Benito and Friends. It focused on telling us about Mussolini’s two main mistresses. In the beginning he first says that Italian Fascist is different from the brutal fascism of Hitler. Mussolini didn’t have any camps and he was a friendlier person it does seem. He loved to physical labor and women would wear him on their swimming suits. I found it to be a bit funny I he went into talking about how attractive Mussolini was. I find it most interesting how before Mussolini signed the Axis Treaty with Hitler that he was seen as the good Fascist ruler of Europe a protector of Europe from Hitler. He does a good job in picking a mistress since she is a journalist that good post things in the newspaper that would make him look good to the Italians and the Americans. It is good idea how he does radio broadcasting to the American people at first in English. It allowed for him to be seen as a good man and not an evil Fascist like Hitler. If he hadn’t of signed the Axis Treaty he may have been able to survive World War II or Hitler would have came in and crushed him for denying to sign a treaty with him. Hitler probably would have been able to crush Mussolini with Blitz warfare. He should of kept the first mistress since she was able to help him gain support in America with her writing. It is terrible how the second mistress is forced to stay in her home just so she is there when Mussolini comes to see her. The second mistress dies with him and is hanged upside down with him for the people to physical attack there dead bodies. The podcast was okay it gave some insight to Mussolini live and how he wasn’t as bad as Hitler except for Mussolini cheated on his wife.

Mussolini Podcast

The podcast was very interesting. I have heard very little on Mussolini so I thought this podcast was the right choice. Mussolini seemed to have figured out how to have a wife and two mistresses. I thought it was quite interesting how he used Margherita Sarfatti to make himself look like a good guy to America. Mussolini seemed to understand that Margherita was a good pawn to use. It seemed he gave her some love on the side not for love, but for his own benefits. He was able to not look like a bad guy to the most powerful country in the world. FDR saw Mussolini as a nice Italian gentlemen and Will Rodgers called him a regular guy. America always thought of him as the nice fascist until he signed the axis agreement. Mussolini was very successful; with using his first mistress to promote himself to other countries.
Clara Petacci seemed to be Mussolini’s real mistress. She seemed to be more of a lover than a pawn to Mussolini. She was very rarely let out of the house and Mussolini would show up and love her when he wanted to. He got her so in love with him that she would deal with the abusive relationship when Mussolini was kind of done with her. She would not leave Mussolini alone so Mussolini decided to keep her around, but he was now not going to be so nice to her. He was known to physically and verbally assault her. Even with the beatings she stayed with him to the end. She was with him when they were shot and killed by Communist partisans. Then their bodies were hung up Milan where their bodies were spit and beaten at by the people. Clara was Mussolini’s real mistress and seemed to have paid for it.
Then he was able to use his wife, Rachele Mussolini, to make himself look like a family man. Mussolini seemed to have understood how to use certain people to help his personal image and to help his personal needs. For some odd reason Rachele stayed with Mussolini until his death and even wanted his body for a private burial. I saw Mussolini as one of the most successful philanderers in history because he was able to use each one of his partners for a specific use.
