After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, it often seems as if he simply disappears from history. However, I found in reading the Article "St. Helena" on napoleonguide.com that this was one of the most interesting parts of Napoleon's life: the time when he had to deal with being an individual with no prestige or power. It was cool to see the pictures of the estates on St. Helena, to read about Napoleon's disapproval of his irreverent warden, Hudson Lowe, and his relationship with other inhabitants of the island such as Betsy. Most interesting of all was the fact that Napoleon himself helped create some of the romanticism and legend that surrounds his name by writing his own memoirs while on the island. The article creates a distinctly human portrait of him; this Napoleon the man, not the general or emperor which history often reduces him to.
